This past weekend we debated on where to go for Sunday Brunch with my in-laws. In the South Loop, selection seems to be limited and our minds think of Yolk. Yolk has received lots of PR so it is on top of our mind. We have been staying clear of Yolk because it is crowded and has turned into a tourist attraction. Thought we would help out fellow South Loopers or persons visiting the hood with a couple other options for an enjoyable Sunday brunch.
First is Gioco. Gioco has a Sunday brunch and price comparison is really close to Yolk. Last visit I got a Frittata with asparagus, sundried tomatoes and goat cheese, delicious potatoes with onions and garlic and then toast for $9. Other Brunch dishes at Gioco’s price range between $9-$13.
Second is Zapatista. We went there about a month ago. Could not believe it, brunch dishes for $5! Huevos Rancheros (2 eggs on a tostada, hasbrowns, refried black beans & tomato) and their Chilaquiles (tortilla chips stewed with tres chiles salsa, two sunny side up eggs, sour cream, queso fresco) are both only $5. Huevos De La Revolution (Mexican Eggs Benedict-which I had and was delicious!) is $8.99. The topper is the $5 Bloody Mary & $5 Mimosa drink specials.
At both of these restaurants, we love the ambiance and service. No wait and no one yelling the names of the next lucky recipients that a table is ready for them. AND, the best is you can relax and enjoy your brunch. No one is starring at you salivating wondering when you’re going to be done so they can sit down to eat.
Next on our list to try for brunch is Weather Mark Tavern. We love their Monday night Burger and Pint Special for $6. If their brunch is as good as their sweet potato fries, I’ll be in heaven! Weather Mark has great specials for Sundays: Kids eat free (with one adult entree purchase), $5 Bloody Mary’s, $5 Screw Drivers AND Free dessert with any entree purchase. And they have other online coupons.
If you have more secret brunch places, no matter the neighborhood, let us know. We love to eat!
